The list of individuals below is by no means complete. It is simply a brief description of the most well known Dada artists, most of whom are mentioned within this site.


ARP, JEANS (or HANS)
* 16/9/1887 Strasbourg (Alsace). Sculptor, painter and poet. Through his experiments in form was to have a profound influence on modern architecture, home culture, and industrial design.

BAADER, JOHANNES
* Took an active part in the Berlin dada movement from 1918-1920. Was known as the "Chief Dada" and "Dada Prophet".

BAARGELD, JOHANNES THEODOR
* German painter and poet. Founded, together with Max Ernst the
Cologne dada group. Gave up painting in 1921. Lost his life in an
avalanche in 1927.

BALL HUGO
* 22/2/1885 in Pirmasens (Germany). Author, co-founder of the Zurich dada movement. Largely considered to be one of the most significant individuals in dada's creation.

BRETON, ANDRE
* 18/2/1896 Tinchebray (France). French critic, writer and poet. Played an important part in the earlier dada publications of Paris. Later was to break with Dada and become instrumental in the formulation of the Surrealist movement.

DAVIDA, WANG.
* 25/5/1895 Hu Nan (China). Chinese ceramic artist, painter, photographer, actor, etc..... Discovered by Hugo Ball.

DOESBURG, THEO VAN
30/8/1883. Utrecht (Holland). Dutch painter, architect and poet. Collaborated with Hans Arp, Raoul Hausmann and Tristan Tzara.

DUCHAMP, MARCEL.
28/7/1887. French painter, poet experimenter in films. Wideley considered to be one of the most important artist of the 20th century. Duchamp constantly challenged conventional ideas as to what art was. Often he would select a banal object of every day use such as a bottle holder or toilet and give them titles which were totally unrelated to their functional use. These he called "Ready Mades". His work and influence spans many decades and encompasses such movements as Dada and surrealism.

EGGELING, VIKING
12/10/1880. Swedish painter. Met Arp in 1915 and went to Switzerland and made the acquaintance of Tristan Tzara who introduced him to the Dada movement. Experimented with abstract shapes and in 1918 went to Germany with hans Richter, where the two experimented with abstract films.

ERNST, MAX.
2/4/1891 Cologne. Painter,poet. Studied philosophy at the Bonn university. Never had any formal artistic training. Exhibited in Germany and Paris. Contributor to many dadaist publications. Took part in the foundation of surrealism and became one of the leading surrealist painters.

GEORGE, GROSZ.
26/7/1893 Berlin. Painter, writer and caricaturist. Contributed to satirical periodicals. Came to the Berlin dada movement in 1918.
His images are perhaps the most circulated and well known images of Berlin dada.

HAUSMANN, RAOUL.
12/7/1886 Vienna. Painter, sculptor and writer. One of the founders of the Berlin dada movement, he was also called the "Dada-sopher".

HEARTFIELD, JOHN.
Took part in the Berlin dada movement. Also known under the name of "Dada Fitter". Most famous for his photomontage work and was the main organizer of the "First International Berlin Fair".

HENNING, EMMY.
17/2/1885 at Flensberg. Wife of Hugo Ball. One of the founders of the 'Cabaret Voltaire'.

HERZFELDE, WIELAND.
Brother of John Heartfield. Founded the "Malik" publishing house, Berlin which bought out a number of dadaist publications.

HOECH, HANNAH.
1/11/1889. Gotha. Painter, photomontage artist. Contributed to the Berlin dada movement 1918-1920.

HOERLE, HEINRICH.
German painter and writer. Belonged to the Cologne group of "Progressive Artists" and was a friend of max Ernst.

HUELSENBECK, RICHARD.
23/4/1892. Frankenau (Germany). One of the most significant identities within the dada movement, particularly in regards to the establishment of Berlin dada.

INGRAM, SHANE.
Painter, printmaker. Not much is know of this elusive individual other then the fact that he was last seen getting kicked out of the Cabaret Voltaire for urinating in Hugo Balls martini.

JANCO, MARCEL.
24/5/1895. Bucharest (Romania). Painter and architect. One of the founders of dada in Zurich. Made posters, decorations and masks for the Cabaret Voltaire. Very significant in regards to dada art.

PICABIA, FRANCIS.
22/1/1879. Paris. Painter, drawer and poet of Spanish decent. Very active over a number of years throughout Europe and later New York where he worked with Marcel Duchamp.

RAY, MAN.
1890. Philadelphia. Painter, photographer, film-designer. Most important American dadaist. Together with Duchamp and de Zayas he founded the New York dada group.

RICHTER, HANS.
1888. Painter, graphic artist, avant-gardist, film-experimenter and producer. Active within the Berlin dada movement.

SCHWITTERS, KURT.
20/7/1887.Hanover. German painter, sculptor and poet. Founder of "MERZ", a German variety of Dadaism. A very significant artist in his own right particularly in regards to his collage work.

TAEUBER-ARP, SOPHIE.
19/1/1889. Davos (Switzerland). Swiss paintress. Married and collaborated extensively with hans Arp.

TZARA, TRISTAN.
4/4/1896. Moineste (Romania). Poet and writer using French language. He was one of the mental originators of Dadaism. He came to Zurich to study mathematics. Together with his country man Janco he met Hugo Ball and Hans Arp and subsequently became one of the founding members of the Cabaret Voltaire and thus Dadaism. Is largely considered to be it's most significant literary figure.
